Spotlight on SpikeFast®, the Signature Product of the WVCO Railroad Division!

For nearly two centuries, the railroad industry has played a vital role in our economy and continues to grow throughout the world.  Why?  Railroads are one of the most economical and efficient modes of transportation resulting in more jobs and billions of dollars saved annually. As the industry continues to grow, so do the challenges; prompting the Willamette Valley Company Railroad Division to create successful solutions for railroad maintenance.

Our Railroad Division is continuously developing leading-edge systems and products for plugging spike holes in both concrete ties and wood ties as well as unique application systems to accurately apply them. The demand for WVCO’s railroad maintenance and repair products continue to grow steadily, but it’s our proprietary product, SpikeFast®, that is becoming known by most railroads as the industry standard.

Performance tests results show that SpikeFast® is the leading spike-hole filler in the railroad industry.

SpikeFast®, a non-foam polyurethane product, was created in 1999 as an alternative to wood plugs and other plugging materials. The result was a more reliable and efficient system of wood-tie remediation. Performance tests commissioned by national railroads indicate that SpikeFast® outperforms wood plugs, polymeric foam and epoxy foam.

Here’s how it works:

The Impact of ASTM International Standards

Photo Source: ASTM International on Facebook

We never compromise our product development.-WVCO

All WVCO products like SpikeFast, FastPatch and POLYQuik are tested and developed to the most stringent standards by organizations like ASTM International. Watch this video to learn more about why standards are such a critical element in manufacturing and trade in the global economy:

When society began manufacturing goods with machine equipment in the late 1700s, it sparked the Industrial Revolution, a major turning point in American history. The Industrial Revolution opened the door to new innovations, better materials, and improved efficiency; but is also created a need for better industry standards to ensure quality and safety of manufactured goods. In the beginning, suppliers in many industries resisted the idea to standardize materials and testing procedures.

It wasn’t until a group of scientists and engineers, led by Charles Dudley, formed the American Society for Testing and Materials (renamed ASTM International) in 1898 to address the frequent rail breaks happening in the railroad industry. ASTM eventually expanded their scope beyond the steel industry and responded to the growing need for standards in many areas including metals, paints, plastics, textiles, petroleum, construction, aviation, energy, the environment, consumer products, electronics, medical services and devices, computerized systems, homeland security and much more.

Today, the organization is made up of more than 30,000 of the world’s top technical experts and business professionals representing 150 countries. Industries and consumers all over the world have benefited in some way from ASTM International standards that are used in research and development, product testing and quality systems. In fact, an estimated 12,000 ASTM standards are used around the world to improve product quality, enhance safety, facilitate market access and trade, and build consumer confidence.

What does WVCO have to do with potatoes? More than you think!

We may be known for our innovations in wood products, railroad maintenance productsconcrete repair solutions and automated systems, but did you know our capabilities extend beyond these industries including agriculture?

You may be surprised to learn that WVCO is the premier supplier of potato seed treatment bark flours. In fact, nearly all potato seed grown in North America is coated with our product which helps protect the newly planted seed.

Potatoes have been an integral part of much of the world’s food supply for centuries and is the world’s fourth largest food crop, following rice, wheat, and maize. Here are some other quick facts about this important crop that you may not have known:

• The word potato comes from the Spanish word patata.

• The potato is known to produce more food per unit area of land planted than any other major-planted crop.

• There are thousands of different potato varieties but the most popular ones include Russet, Yukon Gold, Kennebec, Desiree and Fingerling.

• In October 1995, the potato became the first vegetable to be grown in space. NASA and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, created the technology with the goal of feeding astronauts on long space voyages, and eventually, feeding future space colonies.

• North Dakota produces over 2.7 billion pounds of potatoes annually, while Minnesota is not far behind at 2.3 billion pounds! The states of Idaho and Washington produce nearly half of the U.S. potato crop.

Our eco-friendly product line includes Agri-Fil Premium Douglas Fir which protects the seed potato before and after planting by drying and sealing the cut areas. Other agriculture products include Agri-Fil Premium Alder which is manufactured to exacting standards (this is critical to ensuring performance in the field).

Applications include organic treatments, dispersement of dry chemicals like fungicide, and a drying agent to follow up wet seed treatment.

Five out of Six Major Railroads Agree, SpikeFast® is the Leading Spike-Hole Filler in the Industry

For more than 180 years, the railroad industry has played a critical role in our economy and abroad.

“From the food on our tables to the cars we drive to the shoes on our children’s feet, freight railroads carry the things America depends on…. Every year, America’s freight railroads save consumers billions of dollars while reducing energy consumption and pollution, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, cutting highway gridlock, and reducing the high costs of highway construction and maintenance. In addition, America’s freight railroads sustain 1.2 million jobs, including more than 175,000 well-paying jobs in the freight rail industry itself”. From The Economic Impact of America’s Freight Railroads

The importance of this industry and the many challenges it faces has inspired Willamette Valley Company’s Railroad Division to provide solutions for today’s modern railroads, particularly maintenance.

Wooden railroad ties are used on many traditional railways and before 1999, the only spike-hole plugging products on the market for wood-tie remediation were wooden plugs and a rigid foam product. While these products were effective, they presented numerous challenges to railroad maintenance crews. They needed spike-hole plugging products that could last longer and perform well in extreme weather conditions, including heavy rain, freezing temperatures and high humidity.

A new design concept was needed.

WVCO’s Railroad Division responded to this need and developed and engineered a new solution, SpikeFast, a dual-component, non-foam polyurethane product.

14 years later, SpikeFast® is being used by five of the six major railroads. Maintenance crews are more efficient because SpikeFast® gives them the ability to re-spike more rails in less time and the product that lasts longer than any alternative.

In fact, performance tests commissioned by national railroads indicate that SpikeFast® is the leading spike-hole filler in the railroad industry. Click here to see these performance tests and their results.
