2015 EWTA Info Fair and APA Annual Meeting in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho: A Look Back to Our Future

Last month, the WVCO team joined 75 exhibitors and hundreds of professionals from the wood products industry for the 2015 Engineered Wood Technology Association (EWTA) Info Fair, the premier supplier exhibition for North America’s engineered product manufacturers. The Info Fair is held in conjunction with APA – The Engineered Wood Association’s Annual Meeting.

This year’s product and services exposition, which celebrated the 70th Anniversary of the Engineered Wood Technology Association, was the perfect blend of past, present and future.

Many of you may recall that October 21, 2015 was “Back to the Future Day” a tribute to the beloved “Back to the Future Series”. So it was fitting that the theme of the 2015 APA Annual Meeting & EWTA Info Fair, held October 17-19, was “APA Looks Back-To-Our-Future: Driving the Road to Success!” There was even a DeLorean on display!

Willamette Valley Company has a long standing history with this annual event, and we always look forward to it. “Info Fair is the best exhibition that we do,” says Tony Vuksich, Vice President of Northwest Sales, The Willamette Valley Company. “It allows us to interface with the management of many of our very important clients, and support EWTA in a mutually beneficial setting.”

This year, WVCO was a Gold Sponsor of the EWTA Reception and proud to help sponsor the Mike St. John Memorial Golf Tournament, an Annual Golf Tournament to honor the life of Pacific Woodtech executive and APA trustee, Mike St. John.

In addition to the exciting opportunity to introduce our latest wood products solutions to members of our industry, WVCO was honored with a 2015 Supplier Award/a> at the Chairman’s Dinner and Safety Awards Recognition!

Read APA and EWTA Members Travel “Back to Our Future” at 2015 Annual Meeting to learn more about the highlights from this year’s Annual Meeting. You can also visit the event’s Facebook Page to see more photos and recaps of this year’s event.

This latest accolade means a great deal because it is based on the quality and delivery of products, equipment and/or services, as determined by a vote of APA members.

Our goal is always to build superior solutions, not win awards. But it’s always nice when our peers and industry leaders and associations recognize our commitment to service, quality, and excellence. Willamette Valley Company has worked for decades to maintain strong relationships with members of the wood products industry by supplying them with innovative solutions, top notch service and high quality wood products including synthetic patch, putty, epoxy, specialty coatings, ink, paint, and end and edge seal as well as metering and dispensing equipment.

Remembering Robert George Harrison

robert_harrison_youngRobert George Harrison July 18, 1925-August 27, 2015

Willamette Valley Company founder and Board Chairman, Robert “Bob” Harrison, passed away on August 27, 2015 at 90 years of age in his home in Eugene, Oregon, surrounded by the love and care of his family.

Bob acquired the Willamette Valley Paper Company in 1952 with a partner, then subsequently became sole owner, renaming it The Willamette Valley Company. He would go on to serve as Chairman of the Board until his death. The love of his business life was shepherding the development of The Willamette Valley Company and providing for the employees and their families.

Bob was born July 18, 1925 in Portland, Oregon to parents Aubrey George and Mary Katherine Harrison. Bob graduated from Grant High School in the spring of 1943. Following graduation, on June 8th of that same year at age 17, with written permission from his mother, Bob enlisted in the Naval Air Corps. As a member of the V-T88 squadron, which primarily flew off the Navy carrier USS Yorktown in the South Pacific, Bob flew 114 documented combat missions for which he was awarded numerous medals, including the Air Medal, the Bronze and Gold Stars and two Distinguished Flying Crosses.

Upon his return from the war, Bob attended the University of Oregon, graduating in 1950 with a B.S. in Business Administration, to which he added graduate studies in political science. While at U of O, he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, eventually serving as its president.

It was also at the U of O that Bob met the lady who was to become the love of his life, Dixie Mae Haugen, a fellow university student from Olympia, Washington. Bob and Dixie were married in a ceremony in Eugene on June 16, 1951. They settled in Eugene where their home was always open to family and friends.

Throughout his life Bob enjoyed many other business interests. He was Chief Executive Officer of U.S. Natural Resources, a publicly traded Fortune 500 company. Bob also served as Chairman of the Board of Diamond Wood Products. Other businesses included Eclectic Products, Inc. (maker of GOOP adhesives, including E6000 and Shoe Goo) and Peterson Arne.

Though fiercely competitive in his love of business, Bob was even more passionate about relationships, especially with his family. A giving person, he enjoyed helping people and seeing them succeed. His interest in people created many long-lasting, impactful relationships locally and around the world.

Every fall, Bob looked forward to pheasant, quail and duck hunting. He was an avid supporter of the University of Oregon and especially loved attending football and basketball games. He served as President of the Oregon Chapter of Young Presidents Organization and of the local YMCA. He also served on numerous advisory boards, including the University of Oregon Business School, Lane Community College, and Sacred Heart Medical Center Foundation, from which he received in 2010 the Tykeson Lifetime Achievement Award.

He is survived by his wife, Dixie; their five children, sons John (Linda), Thomas, Bill (Cheri), Jim (Mandy), daughter, Cathy Rudinsky (Paul); eleven grandchildren, Paul, Hilary, Emily, Natalie, Blake, Benjamin, Matthew, Mary, Rosehanna, Sarah, Robert; one great granddaughter, Adelaide, and another great grandchild due in October. Bob is predeceased by his sister Mary Jane Felker.

Remembrances can be made to the Robert G. Harrison Scholarship fund through the University of Oregon Foundation, Eugene Young Life, Eugene Youth for Christ, Volunteers in Medicine or Serenity Lane.

WVCO to Present Railroad Repair Products and FastPatch at the Railway Interchange 2015

Railway Interchange

Railroad SpikeFast

Willamette Valley Company is looking forward to exhibiting our Railroad products and FastPatch products at Railway Interchange, the largest U.S.-based technical conference and trade show for the railroad industry! The combined railway industry event, sponsored by AREMA, RSI, REMSA and RSSI, takes place October 4th-7th in Minneapolis, MN at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

An estimated 7,000+ attendees and hundreds of exhibitors from all over the world are expected to attend this world-class rail industry event. The event combines the technical conferences of AREMA (American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association) and CMA (Coordinated Mechanical Associations) and the exhibits of RSI (Railway Supply Institute), REMSA (Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association) and RSSI (Railway Systems Suppliers, Inc.)

Photo @ Railway Interchange 2013

Railway Interchange is an ideal venue for our Railroad Division to share it’s leading-edge systems and products for plugging spike holes in both concrete ties and wood ties as well as unique application systems to accurately apply them. Our team will meet with railroad professionals from around the world as they seize the opportunity to see and hear all that is new and innovative across the entire rail supply industry.

The demand for WVCO’s railroad maintenance and repair products continue to grow steadily, but it’s our proprietary product, SpikeFast, that is becoming known by most railroads as the industry standard.

SpikeFast, a non-foam polyurethane product, was created in 1999 as an alternative to wood plugs and other plugging materials. The result was a more reliable and efficient system of wood-tie remediation. Performance tests commissioned by national railroads indicate that SpikeFast outperforms wood plugs, polymeric foam and epoxy foam.

We hope you’ll stop by Booth 4509 to learn more about these and other repair and maintenance products.

FastPatch Launches New Consumer Friendly Website

FastPatchNew FastPatch Website Filled with Helpful Resources and Info:  www.FastPatchSystems.com

Though our roots are in the wood and railroad products industry, our groundbreaking line of concrete repair solutions is in high demand. It all began more than a decade ago when we were approached by key transportation professionals who needed fast-curing and ultra-tough materials for repairing roadways and bridges.

Our solution was the development of FastPatch.

FastPatch is a significant leap forward in technology from antiquated “powder” type repair materials that are non-flexible, require water, and are labor intensive to install. The product proved to outperform and outlast traditional products, plus it was easier to install with our custom dispensing machine and easy-to-use kits.

It didn’t take long for FastPatch to be adopted by several States D.O.T.s such as California, Texas, Georgia and Washington among others. Today FastPatch is used to repair airports, roads, driveways, highways, bridges, railroads, parking lots, ramps and loading docks, warehouse floors, and other various applications all over the world (e.g., Australia, China, South America, Canada, Mexico, UK).

Product use has become so widespread, we launched a new website dedicated to this product. The website is filled with resources for everyone from Public Works & Engineering/Construction industry professionals to home improvement “DIYers”. It is also filled with helpful data sheets, FAQs, and case studies.

We hope you will visit our new website and contact us with any questions and feedback: FastPatch@wilvaco.com or 800-333-9826. You can check out our videos all in one place at vimeo.com/fastpatch.
