The Willamette Valley Company has formed a number of valuable partnerships with multiple organizations that helped us lead the way in the Wood Products industry in the United States and across the world. This month, we are spotlighting one of the newer partnerships we have formed with the European Panel (EPF) Federation, the “voice of the EU wood-based panel industry”. EPF represents the European manufacturers of particleboard, MDF, OSB, hard and softboard, and plywood and represents members in 25 countries.

As demand for wood products increases globally, the EU wood panel industry is thriving; bringing in about 22 billion euro each year while creating more than 100,000 jobs for an estimated 5,000 businesses across Europe. In the ever-changing political and economic environment across Europe, there is a growing need for a collective voice to speak on behalf of members of the EU wood-based panel industry and European Panel (EPF) Federation provides just that. “Working with our members, we make the case for the industry as an integral part of the EU’s bio and circular economy, while championing high standards of wood-based panel manufacturers and their contribution to a greener, more sustainable economy,”​ states the organization.

Their mission is to advocate for all producers of particleboard, MDF, OSB, hardboard, softboard and plywood producers, suppliers and stakeholders for economic, technical and environmental issues towards European and international institutions. In addition, the organization provides detailed communications and data for its members as well as increase opportunities to showcase their members’ work.

Architects, builders, and designers all over Europe are embracing wood products for construction projects due to multiple economic and environmental benefits of using the material. Wooden structures are proving to be more durable and provides other benefits like fire resistance, superior acoustic insulation, better thermal insulation in addition to an overall pleasing aesthetic. “It Starts Here” is the theme for the 2019 National Public Works Week.

To continue our legacy of innovation, WVCO has forged partnerships with leading industry associations and organizations throughout the years. These valuable partnerships like the one we have with American Public Works Association (APWA) help us to better serve our customers by giving us access to the latest technologies, methodologies, and resources.

Our longstanding partnership with APWA is especially meaningful as it serves public works professionals in all branches of industry. The association has a worldwide membership in numbers over 28,500 and is open to any individual, agency, and/or corporation that bring with them an interest in public works.

One of APWA’s primary goals is to educate the public about the value and necessities of public works projects throughout North America. Every year, the organization celebrates public works professionals and the valuable contributions they make to their communities by planning, building, managing and in improving the overall quality of life in cities, towns, and municipalities all over North America during National Public Works Week, May 19-25, 2019.

“We value our communities and the role public works professionals play in keeping them safe and functioning smoothly,” reports the American Public Works Association, sponsor of National Public Works Week. “Our objective is designed to increase public awareness of their contributions as well as to enlighten the public about the duties, practices, and goals of public works professionals.” Public works professionals include those who manage water, sewer, public transportation, and refuse removal systems as well as those responsible for maintaining public buildings and grounds. They are, in short, the people who maintain and improve the systems and services vital to a community’s health, safety and comfort.

A solid infrastructure in a community starts with the foresight and planning of public works professionals, so the APWA chose “It Starts Here” as the theme for the 2019 National Public Works Week. This theme represents the many facets of modern civilization that grow out of the efforts put forth by the public works professionals across North America.

“From providing clean water to disposing of solid waste, to building roads and bridges or planning for and implementing mass transit, to removing snow on roadways or devising emergency management strategies to meet natural or manmade disasters public works services determine a society’s quality of life” states the organization on its website.

WVCO Partner Spotlight on The Society for Protective Coatings and NACE International

Throughout the history of our company, the long-standing partnerships we have forged with key organizations like SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings and NACE International, The Worldwide Corrosion Authority have enabled us to better serve our customers by giving us access to the latest technologies and resources in the field of corrosion and coating standards, training, and certification. These two non-profit professional associations have proven to be valuable resources to companies like WVCO that specialize in high-performance concrete repair and preservation products, color-stable coatings, floor coatings, and spray coatings among other things.

SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings promotes the protection and preservation of concrete, steel and other industrial and marine structures and surfaces through the use of high-performance protective, marine and industrial coatings. More than 16,000 professionals and 420 companies worldwide carry active SSPC certifications. The association is also the leading source of training and information on surface preparation, coating selection, coating application, environmental regulations, and health and safety issues that affect the protective coatings industry.

NACE International, The Worldwide Corrosion Authority serves all industries impacted by corrosion. With more than 38,000 members in 130 countries, NACE international provides its membership with numerous benefits and offers the world’s most specified technical training and certification programs, industry standards, reports, conferences, and publications focused on corrosion prevention and mitigation.

In recognizing that SSPC and NACE International’s mission, products, and services naturally complement one another, it was announced this month that the two organizations have begun to explore opportunities to work together to better serve their members. This is great news for businesses like ours that benefit from the resources, research, and training these two organizations provide for their members.

“NACE and SSPC have a long history together going back to 1950 when SSPC was founded. NACE was part of the initial group, along with AISC and others, that established the original charter for SSPC. Although we’ve competed in some areas in recent years,” says Garry Manous, President of the SSPC Board of Governors, “overall we share a common goal of bettering society through the development and delivery of education and information that makes the professionals we serve the best they can be. It only makes sense that we explore whether we can better serve our mutual constituencies as partners than as separate organizations.”

“Our organizations really are complementary in many ways,” says Terry Greenfield, NACE International’s 2019-2020 President. “This is an opportunity to see if bringing together the best parts of each organization will make it easier for the stakeholders we share to access everything they need in one place vs two. If we combine our best services and products, our members and customers won’t have to move between two organizations and they’ll know they’re getting the most comprehensive options available.”

Over the next few months, SSPC and NACE member leaders and staff will convene to discuss possible benefits and challenges of working together. We will be eager to find out the outcome of those discussions and look forward to the potential benefits to association members. This month, we are spotlighting our partnership with REMSA (Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association), a non-profit trade group representing over 330 railway engineers, contractors, and consultants and maintenance-of-way suppliers across the country.

One of the things we value the most about our partnership with REMSA is their efforts to advance initiatives in support of the rail industry (a $5 billion industry supporting over 35,000 jobs nationwide) and the business development opportunities the organization extends to its members on a national and international scale. Railroad Day on Capitol Hill

In a few short weeks, advocates and representatives of the Railroad Industry will make their annual journey to Washington DC to make their messages heard by lawmakers. This important annual event, Railroad Day on Capitol Hill, is taking place on March 2nd, 2017, at the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown, 999 9th St, NW, Washington, DC.

With the ever-shifting political climate, it’s more important than ever to be heard.  As anyone who has taken part in the event before knows, it’s the most effective way for the railroad industry’s message to be reached by Congress and can only succeed if everyone turns out in order to present a unified industry.

The event takes place over the course of one day with appointments, meetings, and events all organized in order to communicate the important role that the railroad industry plays in America’s economy, improving our country’s role in global marketplace, and our ongoing success in helping the environment.

Attendees of Railroad Day will have the opportunity to speak directly with decision makers and help promote real change. “Railroad Day is our single most impactful day of the year with Congressional leaders,” said Linda Darr, president of the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association, of 2016’s Railroad Day. “We had the opportunity to address issues of importance to our industry and the shipper customers we serve.”

Willamette Valley Company is thankful for the strategic partners we have. It’s important we all work together and look towards the progress and innovations that each has accomplished. With that in mind, we’re taking this opportunity to spotlight one of our partners, the Wood Moulding and Millwork Producers Association (MMPA).

The MMPA is a non-profit association, created to promote quality products, develop sources of supply, promote use of raw materials, standardize products, and increase both domestic and foreign usage of moulding and millwork products. To this end, MMPA provides the tools, information and services necessary to help its members achieve increased sales and profitability.

Beyond assisting their members and promoting products and materials, the MMPA is driven to promote the use of sustainable forest and recyclable/renewable resources. Protecting the ecosystem for future generations is a key principal of MMPA, and strengthens their commitment to protect the natural cycle of forests. Railway Supply Community to Law Makers: Don’t Impose Regulations

Rail Supply IndustryThe Willamette Valley Company has joined a growing group of industry leaders within the railway supply community and prominent rail industry trade associations to speak out against the Surface Transportation Board‘s proposal on reregulatory efforts, including so called “reciprocal switching” and commodity reregulation.

Congressional leaders John Thune, Chairman, Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and Bill Nelson, Ranking Member; and Bill Shuster, Chairman, House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and Peter DeFazio, Ranking Member, have received a letter signed by dozens of suppliers and contractors pointing out the STB’s “recent trend of imposing regulations first, and discovering the consequences later.”

“As the collective voice of businesses that serve railroads and provide the equipment and technologies to enhance the efficiency and safety of their operations, we know…over-involvement of the federal government in the day-to-day business decisions of railroads once pushed this sector and the larger railroad ecosystem of customers and suppliers to the brink of collapse,” the letter states. “Without the wisdom to partially deregulate the industry in 1980, America would have lost a privately owned and maintained economic engine that provides quality jobs to support families and communities, affordable and environmentally friendly options for businesses to move goods and critical infrastructure to support passenger railroads.”

Here are more excerpts from that letter:

“We are deeply concerned that this regulatory effort could greatly cut into capital spending by the railroads. Past analysis by the Association of American Railroads found that a similar proposal could affect an estimated 7.5 million carloads of traffic, placing nearly $8 billion in revenues at risk. Reduced revenues mean reduced money for investment in the rail network and reduced demand for businesses like ours. Continued investments are critical for maintaining a safe and efficient rail network and allow us to provide strong employment opportunities in our communities.

The railroad supply community plays an integral role in maintaining the world’s safest, most efficient and highly competitive freight railroad system. We also provide high-paying and high-skilled manufacturing jobs in our communities.

We support a transparent and efficient STB and believe that the agency maintains an important role in maintaining a proven regulatory structure. But we do not support the STB’s recent trend of imposing regulations first, and discovering the consequences later.”
